giant puppet heads with les grandes personnes
i've been very busy past few weeks at the beat initiative making giant puppet head for a carnival day they are doin on the 23th of july at botanic gardens.
so we had this group come over http://www.lesgrandespersonnes.org/ who where over with us 2 years ago for our summer carnival.
i worked with them then and found this video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9O4FZc-XRI
so when offered the opportunity to work a bit closer with them and make my own big head i was all up for that

we started by doing some sketches which we then turned into more precisly measured designs for the finished head. the theme was circus so i went for the idea of a dancing bear (if you google images of dancing bear make sure you keep safe search on its a whole wild world out there).
from these initial sketches we made wee clay models
if you look at the bottom right right sketch (posted above) you can see already this is pretty close to my initial sketch which was kinda cool
everyone was very proud of their creations and rightly so - there was a collection of very talented local talent in one warehouse
at this point we had 11 clay heads made but could only make 6 big ones so we had a heated debate
my wee bear got picked so i was happy along with 2 human heads a pig an ape and a rabbit
the following photos show the process to making the big heads at this point we all shared the work between us which was odd for me but any tantrums i had were kept internal which is the best way to handle them i feel, when i finally had a little time to myself at the weekend i played some battlefield drank some wine and felt better
(oh we also had a wee carnival in botanic which was hellova fun)
forgive me some of the quality of the photos i recently got a new camera and am still learnin it
alas i never got to paint it myself :(
but it is a good paint job :)
holy shit look at my belly|!!!
